The department was opened in 1966 at the time of the establishment of the college. M. Nag and Ahmed Hussain Khan were the founder teachers of the department but they left early. Khan later joined as the Principal of Madhya Kamrup College, Chenga, Barpeta. After his departure, the department was managed by Dr Krishna Kinkar Mahanta and Dr Purna Kanta Khataniar for a long period of time till their retirements. Initially, the department taught Logic at the HS level and Philosophy (General) at the UG level. BA Major programme in Philosophy was opened in 1995. The department is scheduled to organise a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Religion and Politics in Indian Context in June 2017. At present the Department has two permanent and two contractual teachers.

The Department of Philosophy Communicates a clear understanding of historical and contemporary philosophical enquiry.

The Department demonstrates an ability to think independently about a philosophical topic or problem.
The Department demonstrates its commitment to preparing students with well-defined cognitive skills to face all the challenges of professionalism and realistic work culture of a competitive global scenario.
The Department volunteers to work for the integral development of the human person through certain value-based educational development of every student.


MISSION

The mission of the philosophy department is to impart philosophical knowledge to the youth of the different communities surrounding the institution.
Prepare students for various career opportunities.
Instill a sense of social responsibility and ethical conduct among students.


PROGRAMME OUTCOME

Program outcomes are the statement that conveys the intent of a program of study. Specifically, it refers to what a student should know or be able to do at the end of a program. These relate to the skills, knowledge and behaviour that students acquire through the specific program. The program outcome of the Department of Philosophy may be set as follows---

1) The study of philosophy enhances a student's problem-solving and decision-making capacities.
2) It helps students to analyze concepts, definitions, arguments and problems.
3) It contributes to our capacity to organize ideas and issues, deal with questions of value and extract what is essential from large quantities of information.
4) It develops effective communication skills and personality development.
5) It contributes towards the formation of human values and ethics.
6) It develops the critical thinking power of the students to handle real-life problems.
7) It develops reasoning capacity.


PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOMES

PSO1. The study of Logic enriches one’s thinking skills and sharpens one’s analytical abilities
PSO2. The study of philosophy equips students to grasp the different issues discussed in Mathematics, Computer Science etc.
PSO3. In studying Philosophy, students develop the capacity to interpret, analyze, and understand the challenging text.
PSO4. In studying Philosophy, students learn to formulate definitions, work effectively with concepts, and organize their ideas logically
PSO5. To understand the distinctive features of each philosophical system either traditional, modern or contemporary and value them.
PSO6. To learn and understand the different methods of doing philosophy, understand their significance and apply them in the relevant areas.

Descartes to Hegel 1. Here we know all the theories of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Locke, Berkeley And Hume (Rationalism and Empiricism )

2. Lerns the Yoga Chittavritti Nirodha and Astangika yoga.
3. One learns the various theories regarding Nyaya epistemology and Logic and also Veiseshika parathas

SEMESTER - IV
PHI-HC-4016 Contemporary Indian Philosophy 1. Studies the philosophy of great Indian philosophers like Arobinda, Radhakrishnan, Gandhi and Vivekananda.
2. One learns to apply their principles in our socio-political situation for its betterment.
3. Here the students become spiritually enlightened if they can understand the philosophies of these great leaders.
PHI-HC-4026 Philosophy of Religion 1. The study of Religion as a whole from its ancient origin to its present-day status is done here.
2. A comparative study of the characteristics of different religions all over the world is done here.
3. Here we come to know the core ethics embedded in different religious texts like Gita, Mahabharata, Quran, Bible etc.
PHI-HC- 4036 Political and social philosophy 1. It allows us to critically examine the political decisions and policies of a society.
2. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the matters like Justice, Liberty, Freedom and Equality.
3. It learns us to explore how social systems, political beliefs and public institutions can impact human flourishing as well as its diminishment.

PHI-SEC-4014 Critical thinking 1. Students can apply critical thinking skills through a process of inquiry that explores the evidence for developing innovative and creative solutions to make informed decisions and evaluations.

3. It is a problem-solving, analyzing and understanding process.

SEMESTER-V
PHI-HC-5016 Analytic Philosophy 1. It aims to abolish metaphysics as a domain of philosophy and to make philosophy a progressive science.
2. In this process, it took analyzing language as a philosophical method to solve all philosophical muddles.
3. Here one learns to establish the relationship between language and extra–linguistic world i.c reality.
PHI-HC-5026 Phenomenology and Existentialism 1. It is the philosophical study of the structure of the experience of self.
2. Here the students learn to study human experience and the structure of consciousness as experienced from the first-person point of view.
3. Existentialism helps us to learn how to determine one’s development through acts of the will.
4. Existentialism is a philosophical theory which emphasizes the existence of the person as a free and responsible agent.
PHI-HE-5016 Philosophy of Upanishads 1. Upanishads express the ultimate goal of life, as unity with Brahman can only be achieved through moral actions.
2. The Upanishads teach us that the core of our self is not the body or the mind, but Atman.
3. It learns the students, the purpose of our life which is achieved through four aims, called Purusartha
4. It provides Hindus with opportunities to act morally and ethically and lead a good life.
PHI-HE-5026 Philosophy of Gita 1. Its teachings help us to overcome our ignorance, ego, attachment, aversion and fears that prompt us to cling to the material world.
2. It teaches us – Give our best and don’t worry about the result.
3. Truthfulness, non-violence, cleanliness and austerity are Four fundamental morals which are taught to us from Bhagavat Gita.

SEMESTER - VI
PHI-HC-6016 Philosophy of Mind 1. It teaches the students, the nature of the mind and its various manifestations including intentionality, memory, thought etc.
2. The problem of mind-body relations is found here.
3. It concerns the distinction between things that happen to a person and things that one does.
PHI-HC-6026 Meta-Ethics 1. It explores the status, foundations and scope of moral values, properties and words.
2. It focused on questions regarding how ethical study – at both normative and applied levels – works.
3. It provides a system of evaluating statements and moral acts which can be used alongside positivists ideology.
PHI-HE-6026 Philosophy of Language 1. Here one studies the philosophy of the school or the philosophy of language from the Indian approach.
2. Philosophers here try to reach Brahman through language.
3. Here one learns how the grammarians interpreted the whole Universe using language.
PHI-HE-6036 Applied Ethics 1. Value and evaluation, knowledge of ethical theory.
This paper enhances the concept of Right, Wrong, Good, and Bad, understanding moral principles and their moral applications in everyday life.
2. This paper educates the students about how to apply ethical norms in the society.
3. Studies ethics theoretically on a large scale. Thus one learns to judge our day-to-day practical issues like abortion, euthanasia, suicide, medical ethics business ethics in a proper way.
