The Department was opened in 2002 in order to cater to the needs of the students who are interested in Bodo language subject. Initially it was a single-faculty Department and Dr. Dipali Kherkatary is the founder teacher who managed the MIL, FML and Elective classes. Now with the strength of three faculty members the Department covers Honours Course, AECC (Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course), GE (Generic Elective), DSE (Discipline Specific Elective), SEC (Skill Enhancement Course) in under-graduate level following the CBCS course granted by the concerned university. Besides, MIL (Bodo) and Advance Bodo subjects are also taught to the students in Higher Secondary level by the Department. All the teachers are qualified with UGC norms having Doctorate Degree from UGC recognized universities. Since its inception the Department has been involving with the Bodo Students Literary Association (BSLA) which was formed in 1991 and working with active co-operation with the Association for the literary development of the language. The Literary Association has completed its 25 years in the month of September, 2015 and celebrated the glorious Silver Jubilee successfully through various programmes. The most remarkable success of the celebration lies on the tri-lingual souvenir titled RWNSWNDRI brought out by reception committee of the Silver Jubilee Celebration which includes write-ups from a number of renowned scholars from different parts of Assam.


VISION

The Bodo Department keeps keen interest in promoting social integration and mutual respect among the groups of people to make the world better place for living. The visions of the Departments are-
I. Graduated students are always encouraged to take part in the activities of social reformation for the well being of families, societies and nation as well.

II. Many incidents like killing, torturing, threatening, murder, etc. are taking place time to time because of the superstition belief prevailing in the society especially in tribal societies. The Department sets vision to eradicate such malpractices from the society by giving adequate knowledge of scientific thought to the students so that in future such incidents never take place again in society at all.

III. Due to lack of proper education many youths are driven by anti-social forces. That is why, the Department is determined to lower the involvement of youths in anti-social activities by tackling anti-social forces through various measures and initiatives.

IV. Efforts are made by the Department to make students self-reliable boosting their confidence level through various programmes held in and outside the Department throughout a year.

V. Students are always encouraged to become socially responsible citizen who always will respect social and democratic values for creating congenial environment among the heterogeneous group of people of the country.


MISSION

The following aspects are set in target to accomplish the mission of the Bodo Department.
I. To make the students acquainted with the world literature (both eastern and western) and inspire them to play key role in introducing Bodo language and literatures to the world in reverse through their literary creations.

II. To produce good human beings imparting qualitative education to students.

III. To make students fit and competent in challenging world.

IV. To develop creative ideas in students encouraging their artistic mind towards the culture and literatures.

V. To develop reading and writing culture among the students creating environment through various literary activities arranged in the Department.

VI. To make students hardworking, responsible, devoted and dedicated to their work.

VII. To develop social engineering skills in students so that they can be helpful in solving various social problems and drawbacks taking place in the society.

I. Become knowledgeable on the subject (especially in the field of language, literature and culture of Bodos)

II. Get acquainted with the linguistic and cultural identity and ethnic background of Indigenous people of the state of Assam.

III. Knows the basic linguistic rules of applied grammar for studying structural features of any language of the world.

IV. Various linguistic elements and components (from particles to non-particles and affixes to bound bases) are introduced to the students giving adequate knowledge of linguistic analysis so that students can give theoretical judgment on any domain of language study as well.

MECHANISM FOR CONTINUOUS INTERNAL EVALUATION(CIE)

The Department according to its capacity has made all the possible efforts to fulfill academic quest of the students. As the institution is affiliated to the Gauhati University the Bodo Department by default has to follow the evaluation system of Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) adopted by the University. The academic evaluation of the Choice Based Credit System is designed with the pattern of 100 (20+80) marks. 20 (Twenty marks) is for internal assessment and 80 (Eighty) is for Semester End Examination. The various parameters included in the framework of evaluation system of the Department are- Internal Assessment (Home Assignment, Group Discussion, and Attendance of Students), Sessional Examination (conducted twice throughout a semester), Semester End Examination, Dissertation and Viva-voce. Dissertation consists of 80 marks and viva-voce carries 20 marks. As per the academic guideline outlined by the university dissertation needs to be prepared in 50 pages by using research methods and techniques. In this regard, a course-work programme is arranged for teaching research methodologies to the students in the Department so that dissertation prepared by the students can at least meet minimum standard of research norms. Viva-voce is to be taken in front of one external of concerned subject who is managed from other colleges. Thereafter, students are required to submit dissertation as a result of research work to the Department for the partial fulfillment of their Bachelor Degree.
Apart from the evaluative parameters mentioned above various measures and initiatives beyond academic guideline are also taken by the Department in order to make the evaluation process more effective for the students. The extra measures adopted by the Department for the beneficial of the students include- MCQ based Test, Class test, oral test, paper wise unit by unit course revision test, etc.

3182023-12-15Swach Bharat AbhyanSwacch Bharat Abhyan is a nation-wide clean India campaign launched by the Government of India on October 2, 2014. To be part of this journey of the government the Bodo department decided to organize a Swacch Bharat Abhyan at adopted villages of B.H. College, Howly. Accordingly the event was organized successfully on 15-12-23 by the department at Madhura Mohan Brahma Lower Primary School located at Simlajhar village, one of the adopted villages of the college. After the awareness session all the participants including teachers and students actively engaged in cleaning the school premises. They divided into groups and started cleaning the school verandah, corridor and playground and the school surroundings. The Swacch Bharat Abhyan organised by the Department was great suxccess. It not only created awarness about cleanliness and hygine but also motivated the students and the villagers to acitively participate in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Such initiatives play a crucial role in promoting a sense of resoponsibilty towards cleanliness and contribute the overall successof the Swacch Bharat Abhyan campaign.

3172023-03-31A Special Lecture on Bodo LiteratureA Special Talk was arranged on Bodo literature by the Bodo Department of B.H. College, Howly to make acquainted students with old and modern Bodo literature. Mrs Dhansiri Swargiary, Sahitya Akademy awardee attended the programme as resource person. Bodo literature has not flourished unlike Assamese, Bangla and other literatures of the country. With the initiative of some Christian Missionaries Bodo literature got written for the very first time in the second half of 18th century. In fact, written Bodo literature by native speakers started only in 1915 in early 19th century. From then up to now with the efforts of different leading organizations including Bodo Sahitya Sabha of the community, the different literary genres from poetry to drama, prose to novel, and biography to travelogue of Bodo literatures have emerged and flourished as well. Sahitya Akademy of India has been offering Sahitya Akademy Award since 2005 to the Bodo litterateurs for their best literary creations in the field of Bodo literature. Dhansiri Swargiary, resource person of the meeting in her speech discussed history of the Bodo literature. She also let students know about the recent literary development discussing about ongoing projects on Bodo language and literature, newly published books and translated books from other languages into Bodo language and vice-versa. Besides, she urged the student community to develop creative ideas by keeping involved themselves with different literary activities in and outside the institution

3162023-03-13Workshop on Bodo Folk MusicThe Workshop on �Bodo Folk Music� organized by BSLA (Bodo Students Literary Association) in collaboration with the Department of Bodo was formally started from 13th March, 2023 and lasted for 3 months up to 15th June, 2023. Dr. Prasanta Rabha, Assistant Professor, Department of Assamese was invited to inaugurate the Workshop which was taken place in front of the Auditorium of B.H. College, Howly. On that day Sailendra Kakati, HOD of the Economics Department of B.H. college also attended the inaugural session of the Workshop as invited guest. Both of them in their inaugural speech emphasized to keep passing on traditional knowledge with all cultural values generation to generation for the sake of their own identity while addressing the student community. In the long period of three months of the Workshop participants are taught the arts and skills of playing various musical instruments of Bodos like-siphung (flute), Kham (Bodo Drum), Serja (Violin like traditional musical instrument), jotha (cymbal), thorkha, etc. The students, who have participated in the Workshop, today, they can play the traditional musical instruments as well, as a result of the same. The knowledge and skills provided through the Workshop will make positive impact on students� future lives.

3152023-02-28A Lecture on Contribution of Women Writers in Bodo LiteratureThe Department of Bodo organized a lecture on the topic �Contribution of Women Writers in the Bodo Literature� on 28-02-23 at the department. The Lecture was delivered by Dr. Dipali Kherkatary, head of the Department. A good number of students (from different semesters) attended the programme. Dr. Dipali Kherkatary while delivered her lecture she discussed pioneer works and significant contributions of women writer to the Bodo literature. She also discussed how their narratives have helped represent the experiences, struggles and aspiration of women in Bodo society encouraging young generation to promote female voices in Bodo literature.

3112022-10-22Freshmen Social DayA �Freshmen Social Day Programme� was organized by the Department on 22-19-22 at room no-125 of the college. On that day various literary activities like poem recitation, extempore speech, and interactive session including different ice-breaking games are organized by the Department. The ultimate goal of organizing this event is to create friendly and supportive community where freshmen can feel comfortable and develop a sense of belonging. The Department believes that a strong social network enhances academic performance, mental well-being and overall student satisfaction. The passed out students who obtained 1st class in the last final examination were also invited to the programme and felicitated by the Department.
