 A talk on 'Proper use of Plastics' on 29 September 2023


Description: On 29th September 2023, a talk on 'Proper Use of Plastics' was held at the seminar hall, commencing at 1:30 PM. Dr.Dhiraj Kumar Sarma, M.Sc., M.Phil. (Chem), M. Phil. (Astrology), BHMS, an Assistant Professor in the esteemed Department of Chemistry at B. H. College, Howly was the resourse person. Dr.Sarma's academic journey stands as a testament to excellence. He earned his M.Sc. degree with a specialization in Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, Medicinal Chemistry and Organic Synthesis from Cotton College under Gauhati University in 1998. In September 1999, he embarked on his teaching career as an Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at B. H. College. Driven by a profound passion for both chemistry and astrology, he pursued and successfully completed M.Phil. degrees in both domains. Further expanding his horizons, he acquired a Bachelor of Bio-Chemic System of Medicine (BMBS). His journey took an intriguing turn as he ventured into Homeopathic medicine, in addition to possessing vast knowledge in allopathic and ayurvedic medicine.
Presently, Prof.Sarma is engaged in a doctoral program at Bhattadev University, with a focus on Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr.Sarma's versatility extends to the technical sphere. He is highly proficient in Linux and boasts an impressive skill set in computer software installation. His impact as an author extends to the creation of textbooks designed for HS and UG chemistry students.
During his enlightening speech, Dr.Sarma emphasized the indispensability of plastics in today's world, acknowledging their role in crafting numerous tools and fulfilling various packaging needs. However, he passionately advocated for the reduction of pollution through judicious plastic usage. His insightful recommendations included avoiding single-use plastics, especially the thin-layer varieties used for carrying vegetables and groceries. He underscored the importance of reusing and recycling certain plastics.
This enlightening lecture, tailored for B.Sc. 1st-semester core students, attracted an audience of about110 students accompanied by science faculty members. The meticulously organized event was executed under the guidance of DandeswarDeka, the secretary of the science forum and it culminated as a resounding and impactful success.
