The authority of B.H. College in collaboration with the general public of Barpeta Road and Howly area started the Department of Bengali in the Pre-University level as well as Degree level in 1966. Bengali is an important Language which plays very important role in Indian literature and society. It teaches the basic knowledge about literature and linguistic views. People can gather mental pleasure and spontaneous joyfulness by reading this subject. Hence, the study of Bengali literature and language is very necessary.
Bengali is a subject which tells many sweet and charming poems stories, novels, dramas, essays and so so. By reading Bengali literature readers can achieve their mental satisfaction and forget mental agonies. Through this literature people can learn many thing like how to read and write poems, stories, essays etc. Besides this, they can think about others writings. Bengali literature can make readers as eminent critics. The study of literary criticism makes the readers self-dependent about literary thoughts.
Bengali language and literature makes its readers wide thinker and well established in society. Through proper knowledge of this literature readers can enlighten themselves in both linguistically and socially.
Bengali literature plays important role in international level also. It takes hopeful place in the list of world literature. In 1913 A.D. eminent Bengali poet Biswakabi Rabindranath Tagore got Nobel Prize for his marvelous poetry ‘Geetanjali’. Besides him, there so many esteemed writers and thinkers were tried their level best for the development of Bengali literature. By reading most valuable books of those writers and thinkers, reads can gather knowledge and achieve their mental satisfaction. The Department of Bengali of B.H. College, has contributed lots of good thinking to meet the requirements of the students from this institution.


VISION

The vision of the Department is to motivate the students to enrich their knowledge on Language, Literature and Socio-Cultural background of Bengali-speaking community of Assam, and to make students understand the diversity, tradition and heritage in order to conserve the socio-cultural environment of the state along with West Bengal, India and abroad.


MISSION

Mission of the Department is to impart knowledge on Bengali Language and Literature through innovative teaching-learning and also to create awareness about Literary Criticism, theories, modern trend and techniques in Literature and its History.


PROGRAMME OUTCOME

1. Acquiring the knowledge of the literary theory, characteristics and basic concepts related to the Language and understanding their relevance in Bengali Culture.
2. Development of the skills in the concept of Language practical applications of deferent types of prose and style.
3. Learn to write, analyze and criticize any kind of creative writings.
4. To acquire knowledge observation, analysis and explaining the characteristic of Bengali Literature through modern methods.
5. Learn to maintain ethical moral and social values leading to cultured and civilized personality.
6. Students can get various opportunities to improve interaction skills, learning skills to establish good relationship with the society and to upgrade their standard of living.
7. Learn social obligations and responsibilities of writers, readers and along with society. Learn to become a responsible and good citizen of our country, role model to the younger generation in every aspect of life.
8. Learn to stand against the corruptions and social evils and play active part in the protection of national integration.

Learners will be able to learn various forms, techniques of pronunciation of languages and its study. They also know about morphology, dialects, origin and development of Bengali words and its meaning also.

From this paper the learners able to know various Folk Culture and Folk Literature of Bengali society of which this paper is the origin base of today’s Bengali culture, language and literature. They able to know the basic difference between the Folk and Modern cultural tradition. It includes folk--- proverbs, rhymes, tales, dramas etc.

In modern era, the highly impacted in socio-culture, language, poetry, songs, drama, novels etc. is generally known as Rabindra literature. Rabindranath Tagore is called ‘Biswakabi’ for his great contribution to the Bengali Poetry named ‘Geetanjali’--- a collection of poetry offered to God. For this book he has been honored Noble prize. The Rabindra Darshan can now be said as a shelter for Bengali society. His ‘adhdhatyabad’ is not confined within the Bengali society; it is for entire human Society.
From this paper, the learners can acquire knowledge about Tagore and apply it to practical life for the welfare of Bengali society which upgrades the thinking capabilities of individual and helps in building unity in diversity. This paper includes poetry, novels and short story.

Paper code : BEN-HC-5016 (Modern Bengali Literature : Pre-Independence period)
This paper is consist of various renowned Poet writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Madhusudan Dutta, Budhadeb Basu, Bankimchandra Chottopadhaya and others where the subject matter is focused on pre-independence environment which defers with modern literature.
From this paper learners can understand the basic deference between the pre-independence and post-independence subject matter and they able to know history of that particular period, Bengali society and cultural environment of the both era. Besides this, the learners able to know the struggling of many freedom fighters and realize the sufferings of those peoples. By study this paper, they can apply it for betterment and welfare for the society.

Learners can gather knowledge of modern poetry from eminent poet Buddhadev Basu, Subhash Mukhopadhya , Shakti Chattopadhya, Shaktipada Brahmachari and Sanjay Chakraborty. They also able to know about forms and structure of selected stories written by Sharat Chanda, Bibhutibhushan, Manik and Subodh Gosh. Beside these also benefited by learning modern drama names ‘Sajano Bagan’ written by Manoj Mitra.

This paper is consist of Rhymes, Fairytales and Novels which falls under Folk culture and Literature where it concentrated to the Child and Adult psychology. Child and Adult period is generally very curious and in this period they like to hear rhymes, tales and so on, which expand their imaginations and they able to think new ideas. The innovative thoughts gradually increase in their mind and for this it makes a positive environment. It helps the society in many ways.
So, from this paper the learners attain the various characteristics for the welfare of the child and adults and motivate them to be a positive individual who is becoming as a future citizen of the country.

This paper is classified into North-east Bengali Literature from the rest of Bengal and other regional based literature. It is very interesting to know that during many years the learners were unknown about the well established and renowned Poets, Writers and Novelists of this region. It is very clear that during the past years these poets, writers and novelists were neglected by the Kolkata based intellectuals though they were very talented. This paper helps to know the learners about the subject matter of Poets, writers and novelists of North-east where colorful life style of this region focused on their writings. By studying this paper, learners are able to acquire knowledge and help to know daily life style of various communities which improve their inner capabilities for applying in practical life.

Paper code : BEN-AE-1014 (Practical Bengali Grammar)
This paper consists of grammar including application of Bengali spelling, application of grammar and various essays which helps the learners how to write and apply the spelling correctly. Grammar is the main base of any writing process and without it writing process cannot be smooth. Grammatically corrected writings uplifts and makes a healthy conversations which differs from the oral languages.
In this paper, the learners able to know these basic knowledge for good writings, good spellings and apply it for their practical life. Besides this, grammatically corrected writing helps to make a good essay too.

SEC Course : 01
Paper code : BEN-SE-3014 (Preparation of Manuscript)
In this paper, the learners are taught how to prepare good Manuscript. For this, some basic rules to be followed like-- stages of manuscript preparation, use of punctuation and other symbol, procedure of citation and bibliography.
Besides this, in today’s era computer knowledge is necessary in writing, preparing manuscript and considering to the learners some basic computer knowledge is included in this paper. So, from this paper, learner able to acquire the knowledge and apply it in their practical life.
SEC Course : 02
Paper code : BEN-SE-4014 (Proof Reading & Correction)
This paper consists of knowledge about proof reading & correction and related matters like—copy, galley proof, hot and cold composition, point, meager, various stages of proof correction, and use of various symbols. Chapter of practical proof correction is included in this paper also.
By learning this paper, the students able to acquire knowledge on the above cited points and apply it to their practical life.

Dr. Debabrata Dutta, HoD of Bengali Department delivered his key notes of the programme. It was inaugurated by Prof. Usha Das, Department of Assamese B.H. College, Howly. After inauguration of the Wall Magazine, Prof. Usha Das delivered her valuable speech on the meaning and relevance of Wall magazine as well as on the topic. The Faculties of the Bengali Department Dr. Sankar Kar and Subrata Saha were also present. All the students of Bengali Department influenced by the speech which benefited their knowledge.

4472023-09-05Teacher's Day Celebration in the Department of BengaliTeacher's Day was celebrated on 5th September 2023 which was organized by the students of the Bengali Department. In the meeting, Dr Debabrata Dutta, Dr Sankar Kar, Subrata Saha and all the students wee present and delivered their speech on Philosophy of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. The students honored all the faculty members of Bengali Department with a "Assamese Phulam Gamosa." In the end of the programme Swagata Bhowmick thanked all and delivered her concluding speech.

4462023-06-11Departmental Alumni MeetDepartmental Alumni was held on 11/06/2023. The meeting was presided over by Dr. Debabrata Dutta, HoD of Bengali Department. The in-house Alumni Cum HoD of Bengali Department Dr. Debabrata Dutta Welcomed the Alumni. The meeting was started with a Rabindra Corus " Ananda Loke Mangalaloke..." Dr. B.C. Pathak Was present as Chief guest and delivered his speech about the meet. In the meeting, an alumni committee was formed and discussed about various future plan like publication of yearly journal and other issues of the Bengali Department. Few cultural activities were also performed in the meeting. The faculty members of the Bengali Department Dr. Sankar kar and Subrata Saha also delivered speech. At the end of the meeting the Hod Dr. Debabrata Dutta thanked all the members present in the meeting.

School were present as special guests and delivered their speech on Rabindra Darshan in connection with Tagore's works. Dr. Debabrata Dutta HoD of Bengali Dept. was the in charge of the competition. The Judges of the programme were Dr. Debabrata Dutta of Bengali Dept. Dr. Dipmoni Das of English Dept. Dr. Dipali Kherketary of Bodo Dept. Dr. Rajkumari Das of Hindi Dept. and Dr. Prashanta Rabha of Assamese Dept. 4382022-11-22Departmental seminarA Departmental Seminar on ‘’Vaishnava Padabali: Bibhinnya Dristikon’’ was held on 22/11/2022 in room no. – 20. All the students of Bengali Department participated the seminar and presented their paper on the said topic. The welcome notes of the seminar delivered by the Hoster Dr. Debabrata Dutta, Head of the Department of Bengali. The Chief guest Dr. Bhushan Chandra Pathak, the Principal of B.H. College, Howly inaugurated the programme and delivered his valuable speech. Dr. Usha Das, Dept. of Assamese was present as Resource person and delivered her speech which benefited the students as well as the members present there. Dr. Rabinjyoti Khatoniar Coordinator (IQAC) B.H. College, Howly was also present the programme and delivered his short speech. In the end of the seminar the Hoster Dr. Debabrata Dutta delivered the concluding speech and acknowledged all the participants and members present the progromme. The faculty members of Bengali Department Dr. Sankar kar and Subrata Saha were also present the progarmme.

4362021-01-09Educational Tour to SaralparaAn Educational tour cum picnic was jointly arranged by the students of both Bengali and Philosophy Departments of B.H. College, Howly on 09/01/2021. The teachers of both Departments guided the students while travelling. The students enjoyed and acquired the experience by seeing the beautiful natural scenery, amazing waterfall, mountains and villages which benefits their knowledge.
