About BH College Unit of Zoological Society of Assam

B.H. College, Howly, proudly hosts a unit of the Zoological Society of Assam (ZSA), a prestigious organization dedicated to the advancement of zoology and allied biological sciences. As a member of the ZSA, the B.H. College unit plays a significant role in promoting the society’s core principles and objectives. The B.H. College unit of the Zoological Society was established during the academic session 2022-2023 under the active guidance and support of the Secretary of ZSA, Professor Jogen Chandra Kalita, former HoD, Department of Zoology, Gauhati University and former Dean of sciences, Gauhati University and president of ZSA, Dr. Balen Chandra Deka. All the teachers of the department of Zoology and all the students with zoology as the Honours/ Major subject are the members of his unit.

Role and Responsibilities
1. Promoting Zoological Education and Research:
The unit actively encourages students and faculty to engage in zoological research and education. This includes organizing workshops, seminars, and symposia to disseminate scientific knowledge and foster a deeper understanding of zoological sciences.

2. Public Awareness and Outreach:
In line with the ZSA’s mission to popularize biological sciences, the B.H. College unit conducts various outreach programs. These programs aim to raise public awareness about the importance of zoology and its applications in solving real-world problems.

3. Supporting Biological Education:
The unit supports the educational goals of the ZSA by providing resources and opportunities for students to learn and explore different aspects of zoology. This includes access to research facilities, field trips, and hands-on learning experiences.

4. Organizing Scientific Events:
The unit regularly organizes scientific events such as lectures, exhibitions, and discussions. These events provide a platform for students and researchers to share their findings, exchange ideas, and stay updated with the latest developments in the field.

5. Encouraging Innovation and Research:
By fostering a research-oriented environment, the unit encourages students to undertake innovative projects that contribute to the body of zoological knowledge. This aligns with the ZSA’s objective of advancing zoological research and promoting scientific discoveries.

International Workshop on ‘Biodiversity Conservation Competencies’On 22nd and 23rd March 2024, B. H. College, Howly hosted a vibrant two-day international workshop focusing on competencies development for biodiversity conservation and all the teachers of The Science Forum were involved in the mega event. Prof. Ramesh “Zimbo” Boonratana, an eminent figure with roles including Vice-Chair at IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group and Editor-in-chief of Asian Primate Journal, led the workshop.
