About English Literary Society

Initiated in the year 1994, ELS is a forum under the aegis of Dept. of English, to organize various programmes for the benefit of the students. the forum tries its best to provide ample scope to the students to showcase their talents in the field of esthetics and creativity. The forum arranges publication of magazines, wall magazines, farewell, picnic, workshop etc. The forum also plays an important role to bond students and faculty members, mentor at the times of requirement and also inculcate the spirit to appreciate art, aesthetics and life as a whole.

INAUGURATION OF WALL MAGAZINE: EUPHORIA 30.12.2021Euphoria is our departmental wall magazine, which periodically provides scope to the semester students of the dept. to explore and display their creative talents. the magazine attempts to reflect on various genres and sub-themes within the broad spectrum of English literature. this time the theme is "PERFORMING ARTS IN INDIA". The magazine was inaugurated in hon'ble principal of the college, Dr. B.C Pathak, V.P Ranjit Bhuyan, faculty members and the semester students of the department.
AN INTERATIVE SESSION WITH SJT. HEMEN DAS DATED: 06.06.2022An interactive session with Hemen Das, I.A.S, Principal Secretary, Assam Legislative Assembly, under the aegis of ELS, Dept of English was conducted on 06.06.2022 to encourage the students to prepare for civil service and learn from hon'ble sir the value of rendering service to nation and society. Sir, being an alumni and ex-faculty member of the department proved to be highly inspiring and influential to the students.

TREE PLANTATION DRIVE ALONG WITH FAREWELL CEREMONY. 08.06.2022On the occassion of farewell ceremony, the 6th Semester students gifted saplings to the departmental faculty members as token of love, respect and remembrance. The saplings were planted by both the students and teachers in the college campus, followed by programme and luch.
FELICITATION PROGRAMME OF DR. S.C DAS 13.09.2022.It is a matter of immense pleasure and pride that Dr. Shubhas Ch. Das is appointed as the Academic Registrat of Bhattadev University, Bajali. Therefore, a felicitation programme is conducted today on 13.09.2022 to congratulate and honor him and wish sir best wishes for all his future endeavors. We expressed our gratitude for his 29 years of service to the department of English, B.H College, Howly.

INAUGURATION OF WALL MAGAZINE ENTITLED 'POPULAR LITERATURE' 29.10.2022Popular literature forms a part of GU syllabus and the paper has caught the fascination of the students. A wall magazine titled 'popular literature' was inaugurated today in presence of Vice principal of the college, faculty members of the departments and the semester students.

PREPARATION FOR EXAMINATION IN ENGLISH AND MANAGING EXAM STRESS. 07.12.2022Focusing on English literature as an academic discipline, a lecture was organised to help the students to prepare for exams and manage stress levels. therefore two prominent figures assiciated with the discipline was invited for the talk.
Dr. Birinchi Kumar Das gave an enlightening lecture on how to manage stress during an exam. He also encouraged the students to appear for different competitive exams. In the same event, Dr. Nayanjyoti Das, alumni of the department and now serving as the principal of Sarupeta College, was also felicitated by the department to encourage and inspire the students. He also illuminated the students with his excellent speech. Apart from the resource persons, Dr. B.C. Pathak, Principal, B.H. College, and Shailan Kr. Kakati, Associate Professor, Dept. of Economics, were also present at the event. Although the event was organised by the English department and the focused audience were the students of the department, students from other departments were also present. Dr. Dipmani Das, Head of the Department, Dr. Sultan Ali Ahmed, Rajlakshmi Dutta, and Bidisha Dowarah were present at the meeting.

HOW TO FACE INTERVIEWS DATED: 01.04.2023In order to encourage the students to face interviews in the future years of their life, a special lecture on how to face interviews was organised today on 01.04.2023 under the aegis of ELS and Add-On Course in Spken English. The honourable resource person for the event was Mayurakshi Dutta, ACS (Election Officer, Barpeta). She inspired the students with her motivational speech and also interacted with them. The programme was organised with the objective of enabling and encouraging the students to prepare to face interviews in the coming years of their lives, and the session happened to be really interactive and highly beneficial for the students. Apart from the resource persons, Dr. B.C. Pathak, Principal, B.H. College, was also present at the event. Although the event was organised by the English department and the focused audience were the students of the department, students from other departments were also present. Dr. Dipmani Das, Head of the Department, Dr. Sultan Ali Ahmed, Rajlakshmi Dutta, and Bidisha Dowarah were present at the programme.

SPOKEN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY 19.04.2023A lecture on "How to Improve Spoken English Proficiency" has been organized today at the seminar Hall, B.H College, Howly under the aegis of English Literary Society, Dept. of English and Add-On Course in Spoken English Proficiency. Prof. Padmini Bhuyan Boruah, HoD, Dept of English Language Teaching, Gauhati University was invited as the key speaker and she delivered a very enriching lecture sharing her knowledge on tactics of spoken English.

SOFT SKILLS AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR STUDENTS 09.09.2023Soft skills improve our communication skills as well as interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, work ethics, time management, and teamwork, to name a few. With this perspective in mind, ELS, Dept. of English at B.H. College, Howly, has organised today a "One Day Workshop on Soft Skills and Their Importance for Students." Dr. Nabamita Das, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, Don Bosco University, has been invited as a resource person to enlighten the students in the area specified above and thus enable them to face interviews, etc. in the future. Dr. Dipmani Das, Head of the Department of English, Dr. Sultan Ali Ahmed, Rajlakshmi Dutta, Hunjili Katharpi, Bidisha Dowarah, and Abdul Warish Sheikh were present at the programme.

ICT/COMPUTING SKILLS FOR THE STUDENTS 08.11. 2023ICT in education improves knowledge acquisition and retention of the students, thereby making education and learning enjoyable. with this perspective a lecture on ICT/ COMPUTING SKILLS FOR THE BENEFIT OF STUDENTS was organised today on 08.11.2023 at room no. 10 under the aegis of ELS, Dept. of English, B.H College, Howly. Dr. Diganta Das, Assistant Professor of Dept of Computer Science, B.H College, Howly was invited as the resource person to mentor and enlighten the students in the specified area. Consequently, the students were taught to enhance their learning through digital tools. The programme was conducted in presence of the students and faculty members of the department.

Inauguration of wall magazine 20.09.2024This time the title opted for the wall magazine Euphoria was "Women's Voices in Writing". The magazine was inaugurated by Sailen Kakoky sir, Associate Professor of Dept. of Economics, B.H College, Howly in presence of the faculty members and semester students. The students have made an attempt to trace the journey of expression of women's voices of resilience, resistance and emancipation via the mode of writing in the wall magazine.
