The Department was opened in 1988 when Science Stream was introduced in the college initially only for higher secondary classes. At that time it was a single-faculty Department. The founder teacher was Binoy Kumar Basumatary who later joined in another college in a sanctioned post. In 1996, it was upgraded to a full-fledged Department with the opening of the under graduate programme. At that time Dr. Sadananda Nath, Nandita Nath and Dr. Nabajit Das joined in the department. Later Ms. Nandita Nath left the college to take up other assignment. Besides, Ms. Bhushana Das and Tribeni Das also served for brief periods as a teacher in the Department. The Department actively participated in the Science Magic programme organized by the B H College Science Forum in 2013 as well as the Science Exhibition held on the occasion of Barpeta Road Session of Asom Sahitya Sabha in January 2013. Moreover, department takes active part in different academic and extension activities to improve the quality of learning and spread the knowledge on the subject among the students.

Remarkable Achievements

Dr. Nabajit Das is an Adjunct Researcher of the NPRG (Nocturnal Primate Research Group) of Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, United Kingdom since 2009. He is a recipient of prestigious 'Mirian RothmandsFellowship' of University of Cambridge, United Kingdom and participant in a one month Internship programme there in 2009. He also received the 'International Visiting Research Scholar Fellowship' to Department of Anthropology & Geography, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, United Kingdom in 2011 for a period of one month. Recently, Dr. Das presented a paper in XXIVth Joint Conference of International Primatological Society and American Primatological Society held at Chicago, USA from 16th to 22nd August, 2016. He is also a member of Primate Specialist Group, Species Survival Commission, IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), South East Asia Region.

Research Project Details

Dr. Suruchi Singh has submitted the final report of a UGC sponsored Minor Research Project entitled Diversity of spiders (Araneae) in jungle ecosystem of Barpeta District, Assam, India in 2017.

Dr. Nabajit Das has completed a UGC sponsored Minor Research Project entitled 'Primate Crop-raiding : A Study of Local Perceptions in Barpeta District, Assam, India' in 2018.


The Department has full laboratory facility for undergraduate students, one laptop with internet connection and audio-visual aids such as LCD Projector etc. The students are provided counseling outside the classroom. Occasionally, field trips and educational trips are organized. The Department has an academic support in the form of a laboratory bearer. At present the department has 2 Nos. of laboratory and 1 No. of Museum.


The Department plays an important role in the functioning of Science Forum and Environment Forum. It also plays an important role in carrying out different project works in Environment Science and takes active part in different social service and cultural activities organized by the college. Ramapithecus, the wall magazine of the department is published by the students during every semester with updated informations on various developments in the field of Zoology. The department has successfully organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar in collaboration with G. L. Choudhury College, Barpeta Road on 23rd and 24th June, 2017. The title of the seminar was Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Resource Management.
