The B.H. College Cine Club was started in 2015 with the initiative of few teachers to create awareness about film studies among students. This club had screened several good films during these years. The first film screened was ‘Aideu’ directed Arun Manna, the story based on the life of Aideu Handique, the first actress of Assamese film ‘Joymoti’ (1935). After that, ‘Pather Pachali’, ‘My Brother Nikhil’, ‘The Old Man and The Sea’ and many more films screened with the initiative of Cine Club.
The impact of this club had inspired few students to make their own films, documentary etc. Among them, Sonatan Karmakar, a science graduate for this college had directed few short films, documentary and a feature film. He had directed ‘Kuwalir Poja’(Feature film), ‘Soan Papdi’(Bengali Short Film, 2019), ‘We: The Broken Cogs in the Machine’(Documentary, 2022), ‘Sabuj Neel’(Bengali Short Film, 2023) etc. He also assisted in ‘Mano Ya Na Mano’ (Hindi Short Film), ‘Heeriye’(Hindi Music Video), ‘Ganga’(Assamese Feature Film). He got several awards recognitions for his works as follows:
‘The Land of Hidden Treasures’ (2022) has won the ‘Best Film Award’ at Chalachitram National Film Festival, 2022.
‘The Land of Hidden Treasures’ (2022) has won the ‘Best North-East Special Award’ at North-East International Documentary & Film Festival, 2023.
‘The Land of Hidden Treasures’ (2022) has won the ‘Best Documentary Film’ at Yuva Lokamanthan, 2022.
‘The Land of Hidden Treasures’(2022) has been selected in the ‘Short Documentary Focus Section’ at 15th International Documentary & Short Film Festival of Kerala, 2023.
‘Soan Papdi’ won the special Jury Mention Award at 3rd Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF), 2019.
‘We: The Broken Cogs in the Machine’ won ‘Best Documentary’ at WCTE FBS Downtown Film Festival, 2020, UK.
‘Soan Papdi’ was officially selected at 11th International Guwahati Film Festival, 2020.
‘We: The Broken Cogs in the Machine’ was officially selected at International Folklore Film Festival (IFFF), Thrissur, Kerala, 2021.
‘We: The Broken Cogs in the Machine’ won the Honorable Mention at Emerging Artists Film Festival, Calgary, Alberta, 2020.
Amit Nath, a graduate of Science from B.H. College had directed a short film titled ‘Baahi’ in 2023. The film based on journey of a musical instrument which symbolizes eternal romance. The story, screenplay and direction done by Amit Nath himself. Sound design and music composed by Deepjyoti Das, an Arts graduate from B.H. College. The actors/ actresses are Pragyan Koushik, Rubita Das, Mousumee Deka, Nitish Talukdar are the students of this college.
Hope that, some other students will also come forward to make films and take it as their career in future. The college tried to inspired students through this club.
