History
With the opening of the Science Stream in 1988, the Botany department came into being. Sri Mrinal Kanti Bhowmick is the founder teacher of the department who has served as a non-sanctioned teacher for more than 25 years till the Science Stream was provincialised by the state government in 2013. Initially it offered courses only for higher secondary students but later Degree Courses were opened and now it stands as a full-fledged department with Major and General Courses. Promod Chandra Borah was the second incumbent to join the Department and has continued to work till date. Dipak Kalita served for a few years till his tragic death at a young age. Dr. Sushmita Chakraborty, Dr Dip Kumar Bhattacharya and Dr. Hemen Kumar Sarma also served this department for some years and later got regular appointments elsewhere. Currently it is a full-fledged department with four regular teachers. The faculty members of this department are shouldering the additional responsibility of teaching the compulsory subject of Environmental Studies for all students at the HS and under graduate level. Damini Kothari became the university topper in 2006 when she got 1st class 1st position in B.Sc. Final Examination.
Research Project Details
Promod Chandra Borah had completed one UGC sponsored Minor Research Project in 2005 on the topic Ethno Medicinal Studies on Tribal Inhabitants of Barpeta District. Besides, Dr. Biju Borkataki had completed one Minor Research Project in 2002 on Effect of GA3, NAA and ethrel on Vegetative Growth, Flowering, Fruit Quality and Yield of Pineapple (Cv.Kew and Queen).
Facilities
The Department has full laboratory facility for undergraduate students, one laptop with internet connection and audio-visual aids such as LCD Projector etc. The students are provided counselling outside the classroom. Occasionally, field trips and educational trips are organized. The Department has an academic support in the form of a laboratory bearer.
Activities
The Department actively participated in the Science Magic programme organized by the B. H. College Science Forum in 2013 as well as the Science Exhibition held on the occasion of Barpeta Road Session of Asom Sahitya Sabha in January 2012. It also plays an important role in carrying out different project works in Environment Science and takes active part in different social service and cultural activities organized by the college. The department also publishes a wall magazine Seedling which provides space to the students to show their talents and creativity. This Wall Magazine got 1st Prize in 2017 in the inter-departmental Wall Magazine competition.
